What's Required
Keep the app running in the background.
For the best alarm experience, keep MusicClock for Spotify running in the background. While the app can trigger alarms when terminated, background mode provides more reliable audio playback and fragment looping.Device volume should not be set to 0.
Make sure your device volume is audible. The physical ringer switch can be in any position - the app works in both ringer and silent modes when running.Silent mode considerations.
If your device is in silent mode AND the system kills the app, alarms will only play through notification sounds. For guaranteed music playback, either keep the ringer on or ensure the app stays running. No Spotify account required.
The app works without needing to sign up for or log into Spotify!Do Not Disturb considerations.
When the app is running, alarms will play audio even with Do Not Disturb enabled. However we strongly suggest you to give a Do Not Disturb bypass/whitelist for the MusicClock app in your settings so that the alarm will go off even if the system kills the app. In the Settings app, go to Focus > Do Not Disturb > Apps > Allow Notifications From > MusicClock.Notifications for MusicClock for Spotify should be enabled in Settings.
You are prompted to do this the first time you enable an alarm.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Alarms
-
How long do alarms play?
- When the app is running: Your selected song fragment loops continuously for 30 seconds, providing consistent audio playback through the app's audio system.
- When the app is terminated: The system falls back to notification-based alarms with the audio preview, which may be shorter depending on the song.
- For the best experience, keep the app running in the background to ensure your custom fragment plays for the full duration.
-
How do I select a custom fragment of a song?
- After selecting a song for your alarm, you'll be taken to a fragment selection screen where you can choose any 2-30 second portion of the song.
- Use the waveform display to pick your favorite part - whether it's the chorus, intro, or any other section.
- Your selected fragment will loop during the alarm for a more personalized wake-up experience.
-
Why does my alarm sound different sometimes?
- If the app is running in the background, you'll hear your custom selected fragment looping through the app's audio system.
- If the system has terminated the app, the alarm falls back to using the song's preview through iOS notifications.
- To ensure consistent playback of your chosen fragment, keep the app running by not force-closing it.
-
How can I play the entire song from the beginning?
- If you have a premium Spotify account and the Spotify app installed, tap on the alarm notification when it goes off to play the entire song in Spotify.
- This works in addition to your custom fragment - the fragment wakes you up, then you can continue with the full song in Spotify.
-
Why does "Continue in Spotify" not work when I tap on the alarm?
- You need a premium Spotify account to play the song in Spotify.
-
Why are not all songs available?
- The app uses Spotify's preview system for alarm fragments. The USA has a fair share of free audio preview clips, yet some parts of the world do not. If you are unsatisfied with the selection in your country, email me and I will send you a refund for the inconvenience.
-
How do I snooze an alarm?
- On the Lock Screen: Use 3D Touch on the Notification and select Snooze.
- While the device is awake: Pull down on the notification and select Snooze.
- Snoozed alarms will use the same fragment selection as the original alarm.
-
What is the green slider switch on the right side of an alarm?
- Slide the green slider to the Right in order to activate an alarm. Use this switch to easily toggle alarms on and off, just like in Apple's Native Alarm Clock App.
-
What does Never Repeats mean?
- If you never set your alarm to repeat, it will be labeled "Never Repeats." This means it is a one-time alarm that will only go off once.

Playlists
-
How do I "save" a new playlist? It isn't showing up.
- When you are done editing a playlist, click the < BACK button to save changes.
-
What are Playlists?
- Playlists are collections of songs. In this app, setting a Playlist as your alarm means that a random song from the Playlist will wake you up every morning.
-
Why can’t I import playlists from Spotify?
- Until Spotify approves an official partnership with me, it is illegal for me to directly stream any copyrighted music from the Spotify app. I would get sued. This is why I can only provide 30 second preview clips, and it is also why you have to create playlists within the app. While this may sound awful, the app continues to improve in great strides. The first version of the app, in January 2019, wouldn’t let you lock your screen or even leave the app at night! The second version didn’t have ANY playlist support, and had tons of bugs. The app is continuing to improve every day and it will eventually offer all of Spotify’s content through the app. Email me for any updates on this progess!
-
I have over 100 songs in a playlist, but it plays the same song every Monday. What should I do?
- If you want new songs every week, launch the app (less than one second is needed) to refresh the random song selections.
